Corydoras Pygmaeus
Description
Corydoras Pygmaeus, commonly known as the pygmy corydoras or pygmy catfish, is a tropical freshwater fish that sits among the smallest, most intriguing members of the Corydoradinae subfamily in the Callichthyidae family. Its compact presence brings a touch of South American river life into your tank without dominating the aquascape.
This species originates in tropical inland waters of South America and is specifically found in the Madeira River basin in Brazil. That regional origin makes Corydoras Pygmaeus a meaningful choice for hobbyists seeking an authentic representation of Brazilian freshwater biodiversity in a home aquarium.
- Scientific name and common names: Corydoras Pygmaeus; pygmy corydoras, pygmy catfish
- Origin and habitat: tropical inland waters of South America; Madeira River basin, Brazil
- Taxonomy: subfamily Corydoradinae, family Callichthyidae
For aquarists building a biotope-inspired setup or adding a distinctive, low-profile species to a tropical freshwater collection, the pygmy corydoras offers a unique narrative from Brazil’s river systems. Its small stature and region-specific origin provide both a conversation piece and a meaningful ecological touchstone for those who value biodiversity in their aquarium.
