Axelrodia Riesei — Ruby Tetra
The Axelrodia Riesei, familiarly known as the ruby tetra, is a striking small freshwater fish from the Characidae family. Native to the Río Meta region of Colombia, this tiny spark of color brings lively movement and natural beauty to a well-planned aquarium. In the wild, the crimson glow is vivid; in captivity, you can coax that radiant red with thoughtful care, lighting, and diet.
What makes this ruby tetra unique
At most 4 cm when fully grown, the Axelrodia Riesei is a compact centerpiece that stays graceful even in modest tanks. Its natural red coloration is the standout feature, offering a striking contrast against green plants and darker substrates. When kept in optimal conditions, the ruby hue can be bright and eye-catching, making it a compelling focal point in a community setup.
Ideal setup and care
- Tank size and community: A small school of 6–8 individuals thrives best in a planted, peaceful community tank. Plan for a minimum of 20 gallons (about 75 liters) for a comfortable group to reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behavior.
- Water chemistry: Soft to moderately soft water with a pH range of 6.0–7.5. Maintain a stable temperature between 72–78°F (22–26°C). Gentle filtration and a calm water current help keep this shy species at ease.
- Lighting and decor: Moderate lighting paired with dense vegetation, driftwood, and live plants provides hiding spots and a natural feel. Subdued lighting often helps bring out the ruby tones once the fish settle in.
- Diet and color: Feed a varied omnivorous diet: small high-quality flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp or daphnia. A carotenoid-rich diet supports coloration and overall vitality, helping the reds stay vivid.
Behavior, tank mates, and behavior in groups
Ruby tetras are peaceful, sociable swimmers that prefer to move in small, coordinated groups. They do best with other calm, similarly sized species and should be kept away from aggressive tank mates. In a well-planted, stable environment, they exhibit graceful, darting motions and a gentle foraging style that adds life to the aquarium without creating stress for shy individuals.
Care tips and practical insights
- Stability is key: Avoid sudden pH swings, temperature changes, or quick water parameter shifts. Regular, modest water changes (about 20–25% weekly) help sustain color and vigor.
- Color maintenance: A varied diet with occasional color-enhancing foods or pellets supports the ruby red look. Pair nutrition with stable lighting to maximize shine without stressing the fish.
- Breeding note: While breeding ruby tetras is possible, it requires careful attention to water chemistry, plant coverage, and gentle handling. Expect specific triggering conditions and plan for a separate breeding setup if you pursue it.
Who will love Axelrodia Riesei?
This species is ideal for aquarists who want a vivid, compact centerpiece in a peaceful community tank. It suits both enthusiasts building a lush planted aquarium and newcomers looking to cultivate a thriving small-school dynamic. With thoughtful care, the ruby tetra delivers a captivating palette of color and movement that elevates any freshwater setup.
